To build an international collaboration of critical care researchers and industry partners dedicated to advancing the science of weaning critically ill adults from invasive mechanical ventilation by implementing a multicentre, prospective observational study of mechanical ventilation discontinuation practices in 6 geographic regions. The goals of the International Observational Study are to describe variation in weaning practices at national and international levels and the association between this variation and important clinical outcomes (mortality, length of stay, rates of reintubation and ICU readmission).
